A Week We Would Love to Forget

It certainly says a lot when you go to download the pictures from the week your sister came to visit and the majority of them are of your sick twins.  It was certainly an unforgettable visit.  We left off after our last post having had a fun day splashing at the pool.  Well, Monday morning Madison and Kennedy woke up not feeling so well.  I actually had taken this picture of Kennedy laying down watching TV with her bucket to get a little sympathy from Grandma (plenty was given, of course!).  Little did I know, that was her at her best.  I will spare you the details, but we'll skip ahead to the girls losing a lot of fluids from their tummies and spending the day doing a lot of lying around...

After finding Kennedy becoming more and more lethargic and listless, it was decided we better have her seen by the pediatrician.  Which led to them deciding she was definitely dehydrated.  Luckily for us, they were able to give her some I/V fluids right there in the office.  Poor thing was feeling so tired and crummy that she didn't even protest in the slightest when they put the IV needle in....

Well, an hour later and they decided we could try going home.  She wasn't quite where they wanted her but they hoped if we kept pushing fluids at home, we could pull her through.  Well, they got the IV removed and as we were getting ready to leave the office, Kennedy started throwing up again.  Which led the doctor to determine we actually were not going to be okay at home.  We were admitted to the hospital for the night.  I cannot even put into words how heartbreaking it was to see her lying in a hospital crib just so exhausted.  It truly made me appreciate how fortunate we have been with our kids' health and truly grateful that it was only dehydration we were dealing with....something with an easy cure.  I prayed a lot for Kennedy and my kids back home but I prayed a lot for parents of really sick children as well.

Well a solid night's sleep hooked up to IV fluids helped us wake up happy, alert and very very very puffy!  She gained two pounds from the fluids.  Look at that face!
She still wore out pretty easily, but she managed to keep down some breakfast and started roaming the halls making rounds and smiling at the nurses.  She was ready to go home!
And Madison was so happy to see Sissy....
The happiness was short lived as Madison started following the same trajectory.  She tried so hard to keep her energy level up but never lasted at much for very long.

She fell asleep trying to eat some crackers...

Casey ended up with a fever as well and since we were pediatrician bound anyway, I asked them to give her a quick look.  She was bordering on dehydration but we were given the opportunity to try and push fluids at home.  I just didn't want to put another little girl through all the I/V fun, so we went with giving it a try with the understanding that if she didn't take it in, we would return in the morning.
(they ran some labs to double check her glucose levels and hydration).  The lab guy was great with her (and she was great for him....not even a cry).  He managed to figure out her favorite color and fashioned her a bandaid out of purple tape :)
Well, we headed home and Daddy worked his magic and got water and saltines flowing into her and everything stayed in and down overnight and into the morning (which is a good thing because you will notice her bucket-holding technique would not have served her very well!)
So by Saturday morning we had everyone close to perfect health.  And just in time to send Amy back to DC that afternoon.  I am so bummed that illness consumed our entire visit together but am so very grateful that she was here with me to help with the kids and to help Corey and I simply get through those days.  I love you Amy.  (And I would be completely remiss if I didn't throw out a HUGE thank you to Grandma for stepping in every time her phone rang to help us out too!)

Just Keep Swimming

Looking back, this title would be most appropo for the week that proceeded it!  Amy, Casey and Abbey flew to South Dakota for a little vacation while Uncle Scott stayed home to start unpacking from their move and oversee all the last minute renovations that still needed to be done.  Sounded like a perfect, relaxing trip.  And it started out that way.  They arrived with no major meltdowns on the plane, no delays and made it just in time so that Abbey could come watch Reagan's dance recital.  Last Sunday, we headed out to the pool to beat some of the ridiculously hot temperatures we had last week.  The kids had a great time swimming.  See the next post to see how we spent the rest of the week.  Good thing we had a little fun.....

Potter County Fair

We headed to the Potter County Fair this weekend to take in Harrison's favorite....the demolition derby!  Madison and Kennedy weren't thrilled with all the noise but they were more than happy to partake in the free watermelon feed!

(Kennedy didn't really want to get in the shot, but you can almost see her face in the sheep head)

Dance Recital

Reagan begged and begged and begged to participate in a summer dance program run by a high school girl in town.   She had a lot of fun and was most excited that her cousin Abbey's trip to South Dakota got her here just in time to come watch the recital..

They had photos and a dress rehearsal a few days ago:

And then Saturday night was the big performace:

Zooman

The Potter County Library always sponsors a fun event during the summer for the kids.  This year, they brought in The Zooman.  He travels the country with various pets from his zoo to show the kids. It was such a hot day that he couldn't bring any of his furry or feathery friends, so he brought snakes and turtles.  Harrison was a bit wary about taking a picture but finally agreed so long as he didn't have to touch it!

Putting the Kids to Work at Brown's Insurance

It's been a busy summer here in Gettysburg.  Not only are we adding on to our house (I really should be publishing a post on all the changes so far).  But Corey has resigned from his job with the Economic Development Corporation to join forces with his dad at Brown's Insurance.  They have quickly built a new office building along the highway and put us to work this weekend getting the whole thing painted.  Reagan and Harrison were eager to help!  And they actually did a great job.  I expected them to get about as far as they had in the picture and then decide that was enough fun for the day, but they actually kept at it for a long time.  Thanks guys!

4th of July

It's the most wonderful time of the year....

At least if you ask the kids....

It's parade time!

Thankfully, Corey is running unopposed in his reelection for the State Senate seat.  But it won't stop us from being a part of some great community celebrations.  So, we headed out and enjoyed a fun parade as part of Eureka's Quasquicentennial (aka 125th).  Reagan and Harrison love being a part of the parades as part of any campaign and this year was the first year that the twins were able to ride along.  Madison and Kennedy quickly learned the tricks of the trade and before long were tossing out our campaign cups (as previewed on Reagan's head balancing act).  Unfortunately, riding in the back of a pickup while tossing out cups and keeping a watchful eye on our four children left little time for photographs, but take our word for it, it was a really fun day!

We also celebrated the other most wonderful day of the year....the 4th of July!  We arrived home from our DC vacation to South Dakota just in time to celebrate with fireworks and festivities.  The kids all dressed in their red, white and blue....

Reagan enjoyed her second year of getting to light off a few of the daytime firecrackers...

Madison (left) and Kennedy were ready for the show....right up until the moment it started.  Apparently, they do not like loud snaps, crackles and pops!  Thank goodness Grandma was there to keep them safe!

Harrison decided to be brave and start learning how to light a few as well.  You can see that he exercises extreme caution - just barely holding Dad's wrist while they light the four wheeler firework.  And then running for safety (I love the one with the Michael Jordan tongue sticking out!)

Once the noise was all done, the twins ventured out and decided to give the snaps a try.  Now, those they liked.  They had fun throwing them to the ground but had a blast once there was a whole package dumped out for them to stomp on like bubble wrap!  The poor kid who came to work on our house the next morning pulled up to the curb and thought he drove over glass as his tires rolled over all the ones the girls missed!

Once the festivities of the Fourth ended, the fun continued with a quick visit from Uncle Ryan and Aunt Brooke.  Ryan suffered the momentary snubbing of the twins but quickly won them over with snacks and an offer for a golf cart ride.

And, Brooke.....want to know the definition of cool aunt and really good sport?  She agreed to go for a bike ride with Reagan......on the only spare bike Reagan had to offer.  Thanks Brooke!
