We got very brave and headed out on a family vacation to Washington, DC to visit the Shaw side of the family. Luckily, we added the word "brave." Our trip started off pretty rough, when arriving at the airport in Pierre (at 5:30 in the morning) we learned there was NO AIRPLANE! Our flight had been cancelled. The good news, they had a bus ready to take us to Sioux Falls to get on a flight to Minneapolis to get us on a flight to DC. The bad news....the bus ride takes THREE HOURS (and then we got 30 miles out of town only to find out someone was left behind and we actually turned around to go get them....so make that a FOUR HOUR TRIP!!). Needless to say, we were questioning our judgment even heading out on the journey, but luckily, it was well worth it. We enjoyed nine days out east with Karen's family and thankfully the trip out there was the most difficult part. As Corey so perfectly pointed out, it's not a vacation when you are traveling with four kids....it's a trip. But whatever you call it, we really did enjoy ourselves visiting everyone that we saw.
I took this picture on the plane because 6 or 7 hours into the journey, Madison fell asleep on Corey's lap and I thought what a perfect picture that captures everything the trip was NOT....
We are very thankful that Harrison and Reagan have turned into excellent travelers and did so well throughout the entire day. We never had a single complaint from them. And they reminded us to stop and enjoy the experience as we sat watching them looking out the airplane windows and marveling at the sights below. It really wasn't that bad when you watched it through their eyes :).
Before we left, we asked the kids what they wanted to do. Reagan's one request was to see the Lincoln Memorial (see a future post about this)....Harrison's request: "to ride a bullet train." Well, we did the next best thing and took him for a Metro ride....

We had to include Pops in this photo because despite the fact that he has lived in the Washington, DC area his entire life, he also had NEVER been on the Metro. This fact was even more unbelievable to his sister Mary Aleese who pointed out that their dad was very involved in the development of the Metro while on the DC Board of Trade and actually rode on the very first Metro ride. A very cool family history lesson for all of us!
The gigantic escalators were a huge hit as well (and thank goodness they were working that day!)
